Common failures of the Subaru 5 speed manual transmission this includes: Impreza, Forester, Wrx, Legacy, Outback
This is a picture of the rear most portion of the transmission case. Noitice the shaft on the left that still has the bearing plate and bearing attached. The one on the right has a failed bearing, causing movement of the shaft and destroying not only the case but the input shaft as well. Looking in the failed case you can see the mounting plate has welded whats left of its self to the case. This scenario requires replacing the input shaft, bearing and rear case section. This is normally caused by a failed center diff.
Good rear case close up
Bad rear case section
In this picture look carefully at the outer rim of the center diff. Notice the bad one is missing the snap ring that holds it all together. When this ring comes off or breaks, it loads the input shaft in the pictures above with enough force to disintegrate the bearing on the shaft pictured above. A bad center diff can be caused by mismatched tires, hard launches, spinning the tires in the rain/snow, as well as improper towing.
Good center diff
Bad Wrx Center Diff (Missing Snap Ring)
This is the middle housing of the transmission that the center diff sits in. Everything from this section to the rear can be replaced without removing the transmission from the car. However, every one we have ever taken apart has little bits of metal in the main section that houses the gear stacks. You can waste alot of time and money not going all the way in the transmission.
These are almost always floating around in the main section, these are pieces of the center differntial. If one of these were to get caught in the synchros or gears they would trash them completely.
Dirty case half needs to go in the vat!
Wrx case half, about half way through the vat cleaning cycle. We always vat every, nut, bolt, and piece of all transmissions and engines.
Some assembly required
This is the completed transmission. This process is not to show you how to build a transmission but what commonly goes wrong. They do have other problems such as the bearings on the main shafts and sheared gears. These problems are common on cars that are beat on or raced and normally require full on rebuilds of almost every part. Manual transmission rebuilds cost between 1800-2800 depending on whats wrong with it.
